Zena, was presented to us with pyomtra.  She is a 7 and a half year old Siberian Husky.

One of the more common surgerical procedures performed on female dogs is the ovariohysterectomy (OHE) or spay.  This procedure is normally performed between 3 - 7 months of age.  The prime goal of this procedure is to decrease the pet population.  However, there are other health benefits associated with this surgery.

One of the more common disorders that occur in females not spayed is a condition called pyometra.

Pyometra is a severe infection of the uterus which causes significant illness and will lead to death if not treated.  This condition occurs normally in older pets during the heat cycle.  The cervix is dilated and fluid accumulates in the uterus.  Bacteria migarate through the cervix and grow in the uteren body, causing a severe inflammatory reaction.

Common symptoms include: Fever, lethargy, excessive thirst, and vaginal discharge.

This condition is normally treated by performing an OHE.  Our aim in early spaying is to avoid the ill-effects to your pet and the expense of treating older dogs with pyomtera.
